Stress strikes us all, and the ideal way to banish it is to take a nice, relaxing vacation. Who could be stressed out when you’ve got palm trees, fruity drinks, and sunshine?
Sigh. This would be great, but no one has time for a tropical getaway in the middle of a workday.
As entrepreneurs, we need solutions to lower our stress that are easy to do and effective enough to get in, get it done, and get back to work with a refreshed state of mind. When you need to de-stress in a hurry, why not try these four quick-and-dirty tips?
It seems that all of us have a hard time getting anything done without our phone in hand, but the truth of the matter is that your devices might actually be hurting your productivity. The next time you have a demanding task in front of you, try taking a different approach. Silence your cell phone and turn off alerts, at least for an hour or so. This will allow you to focus on your work without wondering what every little beep, blip, and flash of the screen might mean.
Clean Your Work Area
Our stress levels are strongly linked to the amount of clutter in our work area. Having an overly full desk or office subtly communicates to us that the work is never done. This can raise our anxiety quickly. As weird as this sounds, doing a little bit of tidying could make you feel a lot more organized mentally. Just don’t go overboard and use this as a way to procrastinate.
Do you feel like you’re in a rut and need to view your work in a new way? Sometimes, you just need a change of scenery. This doesn’t have to be anything big — just moving from the kitchen table to the couch or from the office to the conference room could work wonders. If there’s a lot of activity in your space and you need to get out of the house, make sure you’re bringing everything you need for a successful work outing.
Take 5 Deep Breaths
Yes, five of them. Sitting for 1-2 minutes and just focusing on your breathing could be just what you need. It’s a proven fact that when you engage in deep breathing, your body releases endorphins that help boost your mood. If you feel like you don’t have time to just sit and breathe, then this is exactly the right moment to do just that. Taking a minute to sit quietly and focus on your breathing can be a powerful tool that helps you approach your work with a more positive attitude.
The next time stress hits during a busy workday, remember that you don’t have to just grin and bear it. There are ways to combat stress that don’t require you to take an extended break.
