Books We Love: The Alchemist
Reviewed by Nadia Shipley
Many of us aren’t sure of our purpose in life, but we tend to have goals we are working to achieve. The trouble is, in our attempts to achieve our goals, we sometimes get so wrapped up in the end result that the journey becomes a blur. This can make us miss the lessons we were supposed to learn along the way and keep us from discovering our true purpose.
Instead of allowing ourselves to stress so much about the future, the treasures we’ll receive when we get there, or fretting about the possibility of failure, let’s take a moment to breathe and focus on what is right in front of us… Life.
If you’re tired of self-help or how-to books, try The Alchemist: an abstract story about a man who discovers his purpose and learns the keys to living a happy life.
Things We Learned
Don’t Get Discouraged
There is nothing wrong with pursuing a great treasure. In fact, hunting for the next big thing is how greatness has been achieved for years. But in every great endeavor worth pursuing, we will encounter obstacles
Don’t let the fear of failure derail you. If you let fear limit you to playing it safe inside your comfort zone, you might end up missing your true calling or a lesson that pushes you to the next level.
Look on the Bright Side
Some of us may experience more hardships than others, but no matter what, don’t let yourself fall into the “victim” trap. You’re no “victim.” Instead, think of yourself as something more empowered and exciting: an “adventurer!”
The way we see the world (and ourselves) has a huge impact on how we behave. A “victim” feels helpless, but an “adventurer” rolls with the punches and always takes a moment to look for the silver lining.
Looking at the world through a positive lens will ultimately make us happier. So, look on the bright side!
In many different circumstances, the story suggests that the Universe provides clues to help us see past setbacks and focus on our goals.
Unexpected complications or disappointments are no fun, but just because something doesn’t go according to plan, that doesn’t mean it can’t help us achieve our goals somehow.
The important thing is to look beyond our expectations. If we choose to be close-minded, we cut ourselves off from discovering these unexpected bonuses. But if we learn to open our minds and listen to the Universe, we will better understand how to achieve our goals no matter what.
And that can’t be bad, right?
“We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.”
