Even if Mom always said to ‘just be yourself,’ it can still be a little nerve-wracking when you know how much a first impression matters.
It turns out someone can form his or her (often long-lasting) impression of you within the first 7 seconds of meeting you. Seven seconds! There are so many factors that go into that first impression that it’s hard to figure out where to start.
Check out our 3 foolproof ways to make an outstanding first impression without breaking a sweat…
Be On Time
This should be a given, but it’s so simple that sometimes it can be easily overlooked. Tardiness makes you look irresponsible and inconsiderate. Period.
Being late makes a negative first impression before you even walk in the door, especially if someone is being kept waiting.
However, even the most well-intentioned plans can go awry. If you can’t avoid tardiness, all is not lost. Just give the other party the courtesy of a phone call or text to let them know you’re on your way.
Keep Your Cell Phone in Your Purse
Who would you rather talk to and/or do business with: the woman who’s always glancing at her phone, answering texts, writing emails, and scrolling through her news feed or the woman who makes eye contact and actually appears to listen to what you’re saying?
It’s a no-brainer, right? Today’s environment is so full of constant, on-demand information that sometimes it seems like the art of conversation (minus the distractions) is long gone.
It’s common courtesy, but it’s also one of the best ways to appear charismatic. If you want someone to think well of you, make sure they know you’re interested in what they’re saying. Focus on them!
Use the Magic Words
No, Harry Potter fans, I don’t mean, “Sectumsempra.”
We’re talking about the beauty of ‘Please’ and ‘Thank You’. Good manners are always important. A pro like you uses these words in your everyday language, but consider kicking it up a notch and you’ll see how it transforms people’s reactions to you.
And don’t just be polite to the people you’re meeting with. Be courteous to your server, barista, and all those around you. Not only will it leave a good impression, but you’ll also be making the world around you just a little bit more pleasant.
Okay, so after all of that, we’re still big fans of Mom’s advice…
Just be yourself.
The important thing here is to relax. Focus on being the most friendly, positive, authentic version of yourself. After all, being a little flawed, quirky, and real will make people love you even more. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather hang out with Jennifer Lawrence than Grace Kelly.
The above tips are useful but remember: it’s all you, baby.
About Feliza David, Creative Director
Think of Feliza as LEAP’s very own Don Draper, except without the hard partying. (The only thing she binges on is Netflix.) From tool reviews to learning modules to eye-catching graphics, Feliza probably had her hand in it.
She loves LEAP because:
Feliza lives in Indiana with her husband, two dogs, one cat, and the occasional goldfish. When she’s not writing, drawing, or reading, she’s probably sleeping.
