Let’s Take 5 with Tammy
What is one piece of advice you’d give to your first-year-in-business self?
Don’t be afraid of competition. Instead, embrace it! Establishing relationships with your competition will help build your professional network and provide business leads that you might not have found on your own. Independent PR consultants in the Indianapolis market are like family; we’re always helping one another and lifting each other up.
What is your favorite app or tool?
Toggl tracks time based on tasks and projects. I’m a slave to the clock, so it really helps me when billing clients.
What is one mistake you’ve made that you’ve learned from?
One of my first clients was simply not a good fit. Instead of acknowledging this and walking away from the project, I tried to make a go of it. In the end, the anxiety, hurt feelings, and hostility this created really rocked my confidence. I know now that it’s ALWAYS okay to turn down business and (God forbid) to “break up” with a client who simply isn’t working out. In the end, doing this will always be best for you AND the potential client.
If they made a movie of your life, who would you want to play you?
Jennifer Lawrence has played many characters with a great deal of humility, and that really resonates with me. She is equal parts assertive and humble — key ingredients for a successful entrepreneur. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that she is a vocal advocate of feminism and gender equality.
What’s one thing you wish more women entrepreneurs knew?
I wish more women thinking about entrepreneurship knew how fulfilling this life can be. Sure, it’s a lot of work, but you can set your own hours, choose your own clients, and stretch yourself as much or as little as you like. Plus, you’ll find yourself in good company with a sorority of like-minded female entrepreneurs to lift you up. It’s quite empowering.
