Anyone who’s ever started a business knows what it’s like to have a mind brimming with questions. It seems like just when you think you’ve taken two steps forward, you come up with more questions that take you three steps back. Pretty soon, it feels like every thought you have ends with a question mark.
Do I need to start an LLC?
How much should I charge?
What’s the difference between an employee and a contractor?
What’s a vectorized logo — and why does it sound like a bacterial infection?
But if you’re in this for the long haul, there’s one question you should answer before you put all the blood, sweat, and tears into building your dream:
“Why Am I Doing This?”
At first, this may seem completely obvious, but if you dig a little deeper, you might be surprised by what you find.
The 5 Whys
Sakichi Toyoda (inventor, industrialist, and all-around innovator) had a theory: by asking yourself “Why?” five times, you could get to the true root of a matter. And while we admit that doing so in normal conversation will probably make you seem like a stubborn 7-year-old, the 5 Whys is a great exercise for understanding your motivations as an entrepreneur.
Keep digging. Keep asking. Once you move beyond the surface-level answers, you’ll start to really understand why you’re here.
Your Entrepreneurial Purpose
Take a minute to ask yourself why you’re doing this… Surely there are more fun and easier ways to spend your waking hours (and probably some of the hours when you’re supposed to be asleep).
Let’s say you want to start your own business because it’s always been your dream to be your own boss.
Easy. Because you don’t like being told what to do.
Umm… Because you work better when you’re doing your own thing.
And so on…
Eventually, you may realize something you’d never known about yourself. Maybe your biggest motivator isn’t to be your own boss, but to have the freedom to pursue the the things you’re most passionate about and starting your own business is the most logical way to attain this goal.
We don’t have to tell you that starting (and growing) any business is tough. You’ll run into days when you’re thiiis close to throwing in the towel. You’ll have moments when you’d rather get a root canal than deal with that difficult client. Things will get hard — maybe they already have.
Want a tried-and-true way to bust through those blocks and re-focus your energy?
Know why you’re really here in the first place.
About Feliza David, Creative Director
Think of Feliza as LEAP’s very own Don Draper, except without the hard partying. (The only thing she binges on is Netflix.) From tool reviews to learning modules to eye-catching graphics, Feliza probably had her hand in it.
She loves LEAP because:
Feliza lives in Indiana with her husband, two dogs, one cat, and the occasional goldfish. When she’s not writing, drawing, or reading, she’s probably sleeping.
